About Sunset Park

School Profile:

Sunset Park Elementary School was established in August 2007 as a relief school for Windermere Elementary School and Whispering Oak Elementary School. It is located in Southwest Orange County, off of SR535, on Overstreet Road. Our school has a very large attendance zone; we receive students from Windermere, Winter Garden and Lake Buena Vista and all the way to the Osceola County line. Our beautiful two-story structure has a capacity of 770 students. Currently we have 20 learning cottages on campus to accommodate the additional number of students.

The enrollment for 2007-08 has already reached 1075. The student population is composed of approximately 52 % white, 29% Hispanic, 9% African American, and 10% other. Approximately 33 of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 28% are identified as LY students and 8% are in exceptional education programs which include speech/language, specific learning disabilities and varying exceptionalities. Thirteen buses bring our students to school and many children are car riders, walkers, bike riders or transported by private day care vans.

A very dedicated and hard working staff serves Sunset Park Elementary students. There are approximately 71 instructional staff members. Our mascot is the "Eagle" and our motto is "Soaring Toward Academic Excellence."

Sunset Park Elementary is a "high tech" school with projection systems, document cameras, audio enhancement and DVD access in every instructional classroom. There are two computer labs on campus along with a minimum of three student computers in every classroom. SuccessMaker, a computer program for literacy, math and science, is in one of the computer labs. This program places each student at the appropriate instructional level from kindergarten through eighth grade level and individual, class, and school-wide reports assist with our data-driven instruction. An incentive reading program is used to encourage reading and improve reading comprehension. The heart of the program consists of two Advantage Learning Systems products: Accelerated Reader Computerized Reading Management Program and Standardized Test for Assessment of Reading (STAR). Students take Accelerated Reader tests after reading a library book to check their comprehension.

Our curriculum is aligned with the Orange County Benchmarks and Florida Sunshine State Standards. The teachers and staff members deliver a developmentally appropriate and balanced program that includes a wide variety of instructional materials and resources.

Special Area classes are part of the enrichment program at Sunset Park Elementary. Students in grades K-5 participate in Art, Music, Science Lab, Computer Lab, Physical Education and Reading and Writing Classes. Our Special Area teachers incorporate Sunshine State Standards into instruction, allowing students to learn content throughout the curriculum.

The Sunset Park Elementary PTA is committed to supporting the best education possible for our students. The PTA provides family festivals and fund raising events, plus a highly active ADDitions volunteer program. Community spirit is important to the success of our students and school. Our parents and community volunteers serve as important partners in our students' learning.

School Vision:

Sunset Park Elementary will be a community of learners with the desire to become life-long learners and to soar towards academic excellence and to be the producer of successful students in the nation.
